General Lacrosse Recruiting Advice:
Understand the Landscape of NCAA Lacrosse

The simplest recruiting advice: study and understand your specific sport on a high school and a collegiate / NCAA level. High school lacrosse is unique from high school football – and as a “non-revenue” NCAA sport, it certainly differs from NCAA football and basketball.

College lacrosse recruiting is as competitive (and can often be more competitive) than football or basketball recruiting. And because there are significantly fewer lacrosse scholarships available (both in number and in aggregate value), earning a NCAA lacrosse scholarship is certainly more competitive.

The key to improving your college recruiting and scholarship chances is being informed. Understand the landscape of your sport on a high school and NCAA level and begin to understand where you fit within that landscape. Do you fit in best in Division I, II, or III lacrosse? And how do your athletic goals fit within that?

Begin collecting information and data about universities, teams, and coaches as early as you can because this is an integral step in setting the academic, athletic and collegiate goals that will guide you through the college recruiting process.

Visit university websites and team sites and form a foundation of academic and athletic information. You can access these sites instantly by registering with beRecruited.com or manually by visiting NCAA.org.

Most importantly, start considering your academic and athletic goals early in your high school career. Too many high school athletes start the college recruiting process late in their junior years or early in their senior years. This is simply too late. Take action early – you will be more informed, better prepared, and better organized when senior year begins. You train, practice and prepare for months and years before a major athletic competition; and you shouldn’t treat this any differently.
